Using a magnet to help BB-8 search for scrap metal. We did this in anticipation of ‘Star Wars Day’ tomorrow.

Resources

  • Tray of sand
  • Scrap metal – alan keys, spanners, curtain rings etc.
  • Magnet
  • BB-8

Method

Finn enjoyed counting the pieces of scrap metal as he worked.

Finn loved this activity, exclaiming “Wow!” when he found something new.

I set this back up for Ioan to find after school. I adapted it after Finn’s go, swapping to a deeper box which contained the sand as Ioan searched.

He read the instructions independently, before getting stuck in.

Ioan thought BB-8 would be happy with all the money he’d get for the scrap metal pieces he’d found.

At the end, I asked Ioan what had been happening.

Afterwards we went on to talk about why magnets attract and repel.
