The boys love the magazines, which accompany and support the Alphablocks episodes. The episodes are available on BBC iplayer or can be bought on DVD. The red magazines are Season 1, the orange magazines are Season 2, the yellow magazines are Season 3, the green magazines are Season 4 and the blue magazines are Season 5.

Finn is three and currently on the early CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. He always feels so proud when he can read or spell the words independently. It also boosts his confidence that he and Ioan are working from the same magazines, albeit at a different level.

I find these magazines really handy to take along to busy, noisy places like the leisure centre. They are especially useful for Finn to work through during Ioan’s rugby session. I’m always sat with Cian on my knee and Finn is always very excited for his rugby straight after, but these magazines still manage to keep him entertained.

First of all Finn had to read the word ‘huff’:

You can hear how loud it was, but he was engaged enough to carry on:

Here he was busy filling in a crossword. I covered up the image, so Finn had to read the word.

Ioan is in Reception. He is working on magazine 9 in the third season of Alphablocks. It focusses on the letter teams: ‘ear’, ‘air’, ‘ure’ and ‘er’.

Ioan enjoyed making a helmet to wear like ‘v’. Any craft activity is right up his street.

DfES Early Learning Goals (2017)

Literacy

ELG 09 – Reading:

Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

ELG 10 – Writing:

Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds.
