Ioan set this out for Finn, knowing he loves Alphablocks. I love it when they set out activities for each other.

Resources

  • Alphablocks characters
  • Wooden lower case letters. I felt-tipped these the colours of the alphablock characters last year, to help with recognition until Finn became more familiar with the letters. He could have used plain letters, but Ioan was in charge of this activity.

Step 1: Ioan set the letters out in an arc, as shown above.

Step 2: He then encouraged Finn to say the letter name and letter sound as he found each letter. Ioan placed the first row in the right place, saying “I just want to make sure that Finny knows all of them!”

Step 3: Finn helped Ioan sort the extra letters out, with Ioan checking the accuracy of each letter name and sound.

When they had finished, Ioan congratulated Finn with lots of hugs and kisses.

DfES Early Learning Goals (2017)

Communication and language

ELG 01 – Listening and attention:

Children give their attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.

ELG 03 – Speaking:

Children express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs.

Personal, social and emotional development

ELG 08 – Making relationships:

Children play co-operatively, taking turns with others. They take account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their activity. They show sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings, and form positive relationships with adults and other children.

Literacy

ELG 09 – Reading:

Children use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately.
