Finn re-told the story, painting Rob the colours in the book as he went along. After reading the story they both enjoyed some icy small world play with the penguins.

Resources

  • Rainbow Rob
  • Watercolour paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Penguin figures
  • Ice frozen with glitter and sequins
  • Ice with blue food colouring

Method

“Rainbow Rob is black and white. No colour at all just black and white.”

“Could he be red, just like a fox?”

“Could he be orange, like an orangutan”

“Could he be yellow, like a lion?”

“Could he be a green crocodile?”

“Could he be blue, like a whale?”

“Coud he be a purple butterfly?”

“Could he be a pink flamingo?”

“What’s so wrong with black and white?”

“Rainbow Rob’s dream was done.”

When Ioan heard Finn playing with the ice and penguins he came in to join the fun.

Lots of sliding penguin excitement.

Finn was fascinated by the ice cracking when it first touched the warm water and was trying his best to get it to crack again.

They found the penguins kept sliding off the top when they tried to balance them on the uneven top, so turned their iceberg upside down to find a flat surface.

They then took it in turns to pour water on the standing penguins and knock them off. Unfortunately my phone ran out of battery during this last video, so it didn’t catch the excitement of Finn’s final wipeout.

DfES Early Learning Goals (2017)

Communication and language

ELG 01 – Listening and attention:

Children listen attentively in a range of situations. They listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant comments, questions or actions. They give their attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.

ELG 02 – Understanding:

Children follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. They answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events.

ELG 03 – Speaking:

Children express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs. They use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are to happen in the future. They develop their own narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events.

Literacy

ELG 09 – Reading:

Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Expressive arts and design

ELG 17 – Being imaginative:

Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
