I love seeing how many ways they will play with one loose parts tray in 24 hours!

Resources

  • Log slices
  • Wooden spools
  • Wooden rings
  • Pebbles
  • Chicks
  • Lambs
  • Grimm’s concentric rings & circles
  • Grimm’s fire
  • Grimm’s water waves
  • Grimm’s small rainbow
  • Grimm’s building boards

Method

First they grabbed a blue scarf and used the upturned rainbow pieces, with the building boards, to make boats.

They had to take the chicks and sheep by boat, to climb up the smallest mountain. This was the point when I realised Finn can’t role-play quietly!

They used the fire pieces in different ways, Ioan tried rolling spools down the sides. Finn put them on top of his Postman Pat van to make it a red shark.

They built a rainbow land on the table behind. The next morning they rushed down and carried on playing before breakfast. This time they added the magnatiles to make ‘Easter Island’.

Expressive arts and design

ELG 17 – Being imaginative:

Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
