Ioan read us the quote, “I meant no harm. I most truly did not. But I had to grow bigger. So bigger I got. I biggered my factory. I biggered my roads. I biggered my wagons. I biggered the loads.”

Then Finn role-played what it meant.

The quote that struck home with the boys was:

“You’re clumping the pond where the Humming-Fish hummed! No more can they hum, for their gills are so gummed. So I’m sending them off. Oh their future is dreary. They’ll walk on their fins and get woefully weary. In search of some water that isn’t so smeary.”

They added funnels to the factory, above their pond.

This video was Finn’s reaction when he saw the clean water getting mucky:

Ioan role-played the Humming-Fish having to leave because of the polluted water.

The bulldozer chopped down the last truffula tree and they were left with just tree stumps. Ioan decided to add socks for the air pollution and colour the clouds in black, as they were no longer clean.

Ioan said that this final tray made him feel sad, “Because even though The Lorax is a story, pollution is real.

But I reminded him…

“UNLESS someone like you, cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

They both decided they are going to make changes to try and take better care of the environment and get it looking back to it’s best.

DfES Early Learning Goals (2017)

Communication and language

ELG 01 – Listening and attention:

Children listen attentively in a range of situations. They listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant comments, questions or actions. They give their attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.

ELG 02 – Understanding:

Children follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. They answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events.

ELG 03 – Speaking:

Children express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs. They use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are to happen in the future. They develop their own narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events.

Literacy

ELG 09 – Reading:

Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Understanding the world

ELG 14 – The world:

Children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.

ELG 15 – Technology:

Children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools.

Expressive arts and design

ELG 17 – Being imaginative:

Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
