With his grandparents moving in to a new house, Finn had his very first commission for Nain’s birthday.

Finn loves process art. He is able to think creatively and focus on the “process” of making art, without any predetermined composition or plan. We discussed the concepts of change and transience as his art work evolved.

Resources

  • Canvas
  • Poster paint
  • Balloons
  • Pin
  • Brushes
  • Straw

Method

First of all, Finn tried squeezing the air out of an inflated balloon with blue paint inside. He wasn’t happy with the result because most of the paint stayed inside the balloon, rather than spraying the canvas.

The next suggestion was to try popping a paint filled balloon with a pin. He started off with red paint inside.

Then he tried popping a balloon of purple paint, followed by pink.

Finn squirted paint straight from the bottle, on to the canvas.

Some bottles were harder to squeeze than others. As orange is his favourite colour, there wasn’t much orange paint left to squirt out. Finn’s facial expressions say it all!

Being creative requires a pout of concentration.

Our happy artist towards the end of his project.

Cleaning the paint splodges off the patio.

Finn walked round the canvas to try and decide which perspective he preferred the pattern from.

Adding some finishing details by blowing paint through a straw.

The finished canvas.
