Ioan’s second creation was Slinky Dog. I love watching him do crafts. He has a vision and is completely focussed while producing it. I forget that he’s only in Reception when I watch him work.

Resources

  • Kitchen roll
  • Toilet rolls
  • Egg box
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Brown sugar paper
  • Sticky tape

Method

Ioan has been making springs by cutting kitchen rolls in to spirals for a while, so I wasn’t surprised he produced this. He cut ears out of brown sugar paper and a head and bottom from a toilet roll.

Next, Ioan measured out the brown sugar paper, to cover the toilet roll head and bottom.

He used an egg box for the nose and tail.

This was Slinky, before and after. My favourite feature is that his head moves in different directions.

Slinky has been played with constantly ever since.

DfES Early Learning Goals (2017)

Personal, social and emotional development

ELG 06 – Self-confidence and self-awareness:

Children are confident to try new activities, and say why they like some activities more than others. They are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities. They say when they do or don’t need help.

Expressive arts and design

ELG 16 – Exploring and using media and materials:

Children safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

ELG 17 – Being imaginative:

Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
